Since graduating in 2000 Ruth has built an international reputation producing bespoke limited edition artworks for the private, public and corporate sectors.
Ruth Moilliet produces highly finished metal and glass sculptures inspired by the plant kingdom. In her work she aims to draw the viewer’s attention to both the overall spectacle and individual beauty of a plant or flower.
Glass Press Statement
This series of works develops the idea of pressing and preserving the flowers that Ruth works with, to keep alive the memory of the plant and try and retain some of its qualities.
The action of pressing freezes a moment in time for once the flower is picked its death is inevitable. In a growing flower, apposed to a cut one, the death of a bloom seems less permanent as it serves as part of the plant’s lifecycle.
The glass and the pressed specimens mimic the act of the sealed vitrines of a museum that serve the function of protecting and preserving and the slides in a science lab that aid investigation and study. The layered glass of the sculptures takes on an interesting green appearance that heightens the ecological feel of the piece.
By pressing and preserving she aims to make a statement about the control that man may often try and impose upon nature. It demonstrates one way of attempting to maintain the beauty of the plant, the colours and some of the forms, and yet at the same time it is destroying the life within the plant and cutting off any life in its cycle.
